The Great Dane combines, in its regal appearance, dignity, strength and elegance with great size and a powerful, well-formed, smoothly muscled body. It is one of the giant working breeds, but is unique in that its general conformation must be so well balanced that it never appears clumsy, and shall move with a long reach and powerful drive. It is always a unit-the Apollo of dogs. A Great Dane must be spirited, courageous, never timid; always friendly and depend-able. This physical and mental combination is the characteristic which gives the Great Dane the majesty possessed by no other breed. It is particularly true of this breed that there is an impression of great masculinity in dogs, as compared to an impression of femininity in bitches. The Dane is a true giant among breeds descending from the Mastiff. The Great Dane was developed in Germany to hunt wild boar, and was known as the Boar Hound when it appeared in America late in the 19th century. While intimidating in size and stature, this is a breed noted for its gentleness and "human-like" compassion. They make excellent family dogs Its impressive size, family devotion and gentle nature combine to create a first-rate companion. The breed also competes well in obedience, agility and tracking. From year to year, the tallest living dog is typically a Great Dane. Previous record holders include Gibson and Titan, however the current record holder is a blue Great Dane named George who stands 43 in (110 cm) at the shoulder. He is also the tallest dog on record (according Guinness World Records), beating the previous holder who was a brindle Great Dane named Shamgret Danzas, who stood 42.5 in (108 cm) at the shoulder.
The minimum weight for a Great Dane over eighteen months is 120 lb (54 kg) for males, 100 lb (45 kg) for females. Unusually, the American Kennel Club dropped the minimum weight requirement from its standard. The male should appear more massive throughout than the female, with a larger frame and heavier bone.
Great Danes have naturally floppy, triangular ears. In the past, when Great Danes were commonly used to hunt boars, cropping of the ears was performed to make injuries to the dogs' ears less likely during hunts. Now that Danes are primarily pets, cropping is sometimes still done for traditional and cosmetic reasons. In the 1930s when Great Danes had their ears cropped, after the surgery two devices called easter bonnets were fitted to their ears to make them stand up. Today, the practice is common in the USA and much less common in Europe. In the UNITED KINGDOM the practice is banned.

Man's Best Friend
The Great Dane has a majestic figure that amost strikes you as dominant. But, in fact it is nothing but a loving, softie that would always be there by your feet. You can either train your dog to be a normal house pet with the loving, endless fun, or to be a proud, competing show dog. No matter what you choose your Great Dane to be, you should still give it the full love and attention that it deserves.
LOOK OUT A couple were so desperate to find a puppy that they agreed to take a Great Dane puppy that they saw in an advert on a website. The puppy was advertised as needing a home and was set to cost the couple £600. The couple, Karen and John, paid the £600 for the puppy to be shipped up to their home in South London through a special pet courier company, however the dog never arrived. The so called courier company then attempted to get the couple to pay a further £150 so the dog could stop in a hotel room on its way to them, Sadly, there was no dog and the advert, and courier company, were simply scamming the couple out of as much money as they could.
Karen has only recently overcome her struggle with breast cancer, and dearly wanted the puppy. She stated:
They told me the dog had become anxious so they stopped off at a hotel for the night.
They said I would have to pay £150 for the hotel and when I refused the guy pleaded with me saying if I didn’t pay it he would get fired.
Pet owners are advised to steer clear of online adverts such as these and only use bonafide dog breeders when they wish to purchase pedigree dogs. A spokesperson for the police added:
These scams can involve pets to tug at the heart strings.

HIP SCORE Owners have to make an appointment with their vet who take the required X-ray of the dog's hips. The vet then sends the X-ray to the British Veterinary Association where it is examined and "scored" by a panel of experts. (Details of the scoring criteria are available in the form of a leaflet from either the Kennel Club or the BVA.) Once the X-ray has been scored, the result is returned to the vet, along with a certificate stamped by the kennel club then the vet relays it to the owner, and a copy is sent to the Kennel Club for recording on the registration database and publication in the Breed Records Supplement. There is a time limit of 45 days and a set procedure for appealing against results under the Scheme. The cost per dog is £100 and takes around 6 weeks, if you are getting a puppy and are told its hip score is so and so asked to see the certificate
A litte bit about Great Dane Characteristics and other Knowledge- The world's largest dog breed-but it is also the world's biggest lap-dog! this breed needs only light excercise and for the 1st year a walk round the block 4 or 5 times a week will keep this breed 100% fit never over excercise a great dane if you wish to take your dog on long runs a great dane is not for you. There are 8 different colours (ref Kennel Club GB); Black which has to be just that, Brindle, which is a rusty-brown coat with dark stripes. Harlequin, which have splotches of black or blue on white. Blue,( it gets it's name from the silvery-grey fur that seems to resemble a light blue). Fawn, which is usually a yellowy-brown coat with a black muzzle. Mantle, which has smooth, glossy black coat with only a splotch of white on their chests and on all 4 feet and Merle which consist of a varied coat with grey, black and blue patterns and mismark which is a mix of all the colours apart from Fawn. These dogs are very loyal and affecionate, there have rarely been cases of aggression from these docile, dogs and due to it's loving personality, it adores other animals and children. Altough this gentle giant is a great, family member, there is an upsetting case of life expectancy, the average life-span is around 10 years. the main danger that threatens many Great Danes is bloat. This happens when the dog has just eaten, then is included in excercise. As the stomach is not attached to the rib cage, it sometimes "twists" and immediate vet advice is needed. From a jolly little puppy, to a gentle giant that stuns any crowd. You can never underestimate these dogs as they would always be there for you.
